How Many Devices Do You Actually Need?

Apollo Group TV Team · August 20, 2026 · 3 min read

Apollo Group TV plans come in four device tiers — 1, 2, 3, or 4 devices. Picking the right one comes down to one question: how many screens in your household actually play at the same time? Get it wrong and either someone's stream cuts out, or you're paying for headroom nobody uses. Here's how to match a tier to your household instead of guessing.

Start with simultaneous streams, not device count

The number that matters isn't how many devices you own — it's how many might be streaming at the same time. A household with a TV, two phones, and a tablet might still only ever need a 1 or 2-device plan if people mostly watch together or at different times. The device tier you pick should match your real simultaneous-use pattern, not your device inventory.

A rough guide by household type

  • Living alone, or mostly watching on one screen — the 1-device tier covers a TV, a phone, or a laptop, so long as you're not trying to run two at once.
  • A couple or roommates with separate viewing habits — 2 devices covers a shared living room TV plus one person watching something else on their own screen.
  • A family with kids who have their own shows — 3 devices is usually the point where a living room TV, a kids' tablet, and a parent's phone can all run independently without anyone getting cut off.
  • Larger households, or if you also want a guest login — 4 devices gives the most headroom, and is worth it if you've ever had more than three screens going during a busy evening.

What actually happens if you go over your limit

Your plan controls how many devices can stream simultaneously — not how many you can install the Player on. You can set up the Player on as many devices as you like; the tier only limits how many of them can play back at the same time. If you're not sure how this plays out for your setup, support can walk you through it before you subscribe.

Changing your mind later

If your household's viewing habits change, you're not locked into your original device tier for future renewals — you can choose a different device count next time you subscribe on the pricing page, where you'll also see the exact price for each combination of device count and plan length.

FAQ

Can two people watch different channels at once on a 1-device plan? Not simultaneously — the 1-device tier supports one active stream at a time. If two people regularly want to watch different things at once, the 2-device tier is the better fit.

Does installing the Player on more devices than my plan allows cause problems? No — you can install it anywhere. Only the number of devices actively streaming at once is limited by your plan.

Is there a plan for more than 4 devices? Current plans go up to 4 devices. If your household needs more than that, contact support to check your options.
